How StockPiler Works

You either import existing broker files containing your stocks and options trades executions, or manually enter each stock or option trade as it is executed during the course of the day, week, month to built your trades database. For each trade, you see your paper profits, real profits, portfolio balance and more. At tax time simply click on either Menu  "Long Term Capital Gains and Losses" or "Short Term Capital Gains and Losses." StockPiler sorts out the data and produces your Schedule D-1 (Continuation of Schedule D) for as many trades as you have entered. If you have 'Wash Sales', expired, assigned or exercised options, these too are printed, along with the appropriate basis adjustments, and disposition text on the Short or Long Term D-1 form. If you have multiple brokers, StockPiler lets you combine data from various brokers to produce a single Schedule D-1 under one name (Social Security Number). Simply import the spreadsheet-based data. After producing your IRS forms, StockPiler lets you decide what to do with your trades:- Remove them to a separate file; Copy them to a separate file; Leave them alone. Typically you remove the trades, placing in a newly created file in a folder on your computer containing your other tax documentation for that particular year.

Put aside closed trades (if you wish) to an archive file, to get them out of view in order to focus on those trades that are open. Schedule D-1 printouts gather data from this archive file automatically. The "Sum Profits" button combines real profits of individual trades, including those 'put aside' to show your overall profits. The "Sum Paper Profits" button shows your P/L status on open trades (combined or search categorized). This is based on the "Last Trade" price downloaded by StockPiler from the Internet, or entered manually.
